The Word Alive Interview

We sat down with Tony Pizzuti of The Word Alive, so check out the interview below the cut!

Q: Introduce yourself and your position in the band.
A: Hi, my names Tony in the band Word Alive and I play guitar.

Q: Who are your idols musically and why?
A: Its hard to say, ‘cuz I try to, at least when I write, do my own thing but when I first started playing guitar, just getting involved with music, I grew up listening to like Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, classic rock kind of stuff. So, it kinda involved getting into that stage, to pop-punk and Blink 182, The Starting Line, and then started to mold my way into like heavier stuff. The first heavy band I listened to was Poison The Well, and I just kind of grew off that. There isn’t like a specific musician that I’m inspired by or our band is inspired by, but we kind of just listen to all different kinds of music and just make it into one.

Q: Craziest tour prank?
A: We went on tour with A Day To Remember and Underoath. It was the last day, we did all like last day tour pranks. Underoath was playing and we actually have videos of it on our YouTube page, we like brought a couch on stage on their last song and everyone on the tour came out with like a 30 pack of beer and were just like jumping on the couch and like rockin’ out while they were playing their last song and drinking beer. And then A Day To Remember went on and we came out and had a beer pong table, we had corn-hole, skateboarding, just like jumping all over. And we lifted up Jeremy on our shoulders and threw him up in the air when he was playing.

Q: Who is a local artist from your area who you think deserves more attention?
A: It’s hard to say, there’s a lot of talented musicians in Arizona, its hard to like try and not leave anyone out. There’s this band called Saddles, its more of a folk-rock kind of band but very very talented. Austin Gibbs, he’s really talented. He went on tour with my best friends band The Maine, so he’s kind of getting exposure by going out with them. But there’s a pretty good amount of bands, there’s a lot of like independent acoustic guitar players that are really talented that should get way more attention.

Q: Do you have any secrets to spill about your other band members?
A: I don’t know if I can say anything too embarrassing about them, we’re all pretty stupid. Honestly I can’t think of anything off the top of my head.

Q: What would be your dream tour to be a part of?
A: Does it matter like does it even have to be in the same genre? I don’t know, I mean our band wouldn’t really be the same genre but if like we could play a show with Pink Floyd or something like that? It’d be incredible.

Q: What was your first tour together as a band, and how was it?
A: Our first tour was with Sky Eats Airplane, some friends of ours, it was our first tour, it was in late 2008, early 2009, one of those. It was great.

Q: Favorite pink-up line?
A: For a girl, I don’t know. I don’t really know any pink-up lines. I’m horrible with tryna hit on girls. I’m lucky that I’ve got a girlfriend.

Q: I couldn’t live without blank?
A: Sleep.

Q: Favorite song to perform live and why?
A: House of Anubis, because it’s a really “in-your-face” kind of song; It’s heavy but it has all different kinds of styles of music in one song.

Q: One word to describe your fans?
A: Awesome.

Q: Most embarrassing thing you’ve done on stage.
A: I don’t know if there’s anything super embarrassing but I’ve like ripped my pants before, right down the leg or like near the crotch region. So, that’s kind of embarrassing. Or, this actually happened not too long ago; a few days ago we came out on our intro and I was like “YEAH!!” like tryna be all cool walking out. I put my hand up, and right when I put my hand up my guitar strap just ripped out of my guitar, it just like fell on the ground. I was like “Uhhh, okay?” And then I’m like playing our whole first song and I was like holding my guitar on my knee. And there’s like three guys all trying to fix it for me.

Q: Any last words to say to your fans?
A: Look out for our new stuff that we’re recording in February. And thank you for being so supportive, we wouldn’t be here playing anything without you guys, we love you!
