Q: You said that your current designs have now come from real life experiences. Can you give an example of a piece of your clothing/jewelry that has stemmed from an important meaning/story to you?
A: I have this one tank top that’s basically a cluster of signs with destinations on them. One of my all time favorite bands is A Day To Remember and the song “All Signs Point To Lauderdale” was/is the story of my life. This shirt basically embodied that song, my desire to travel and do what I want, so the all those signs pointed to… well, everywhere. We’ve made so many great friends on the road and have been so many amazing places because of Jawbreaking. All of the destinations on the sign have special meaning to them, like, I put all the cities we did Warped in, as well as places where our friends live, places where something big happened, and the places I’ve just wanted to visit.
Q: Do you have a favorite piece of clothing and/or jewelry? Why or Why not?
A: I have a few favorites. The dream catcher and sugar skull necklaces are my two favorite necklaces because they’re the most detailed necklaces I have and I’m such a sucker for detail. As for shirts, my favorite is the dream catcher tank top we have because it was the very first design I did, so it’s kind of just for sentimental reasons. But a lot of my new favorites are in the upcoming fall line, like the Rock N Roll Gypsy shirt. Everyone called Savannah and I gypsies (It’s kind of a long story of how we got ditched midway through and ended up hopping back and forth between our friends’ vans because we no longer had a van or trailer.) on Warped Tour and it just reminds me of this summer and what we had to go through to prove everyone wrong, so it has a lot of meaning for the both of us!
Q: Can you explain how you became partnered with Set it Off and what “Jawbreaking Presents: Hello My Name is” Tour is all about?
A: We met the Set It Off guys earlier this year and they’re great friends of ours. After we all got back from Warped, they approached us about sponsoring their headlining tour: the Hello My Name Is Tour with City Lights this fall, and of course we had to say yes. At every show on this tour, the boys are giving out those “Hello My Name Is” stickers for free to everyone who comes out and you’ll be able to write your name, or be whoever you want to be, on your sticker to wear the entire night! So, it’s different, but it’ll definitely make the tour much more interesting and entertaining. We’ll be hitting the road with them midway through the tour to vend most of the east coast dates, so if you’re coming, be sure to stop by our table! It’s a midwest/east coast tour, so check to see if the tour is coming to a city near you! There’s more info at www.facebook.com/setitoffband
Q: Where do you find your fashion inspiration? Blogs, certain people, or magazines?
A: I find inspiration literally everywhere. My designs are inspired by EVERYTHING, especially music, and personal life experiences like I said before. I’ll find a lot of inspiration just by going through my tumblr dashboard, that kind of sounds lame when I say it, but I follow an endless amount of fashion blogs on it… or I’ll stumble across a simple quote and I’m like, “That! That’s relevant. That reminds me of that one time… yeah, I’m stemming off of that and turning that into something.” and then everything just stems off from there into so many different directions for new shirts and necklaces. And voila!
Q: What does the future look like for Jawbreaking?
A: I could not be more excited about the future, it holds so many exciting things. Next year, we’re going to sign up to do Bamboozle and definitely do Warped Tour again. We’re also working on getting Jawbreaking into stores/boutiques. I know that I want to keep building Jawbreaking within the music industry because that’s what I love, find the most interest in, and it’s always so beneficial for getting the word out there even more. I’m all about doing this bigger and better as time goes on, so 2012 is definitely going to be bigger and better than 2011, I can tell you that for sure.
