Degrassi is back! Which means, so is our Inside Degrassi Series! This week, we caught up with Argiris Karras, who plays Riley Stavros. Learn about his challenges as an actor on Degrassi, his struggle to help kids/fans cope with their sexuality and how he feels about helping those who look up to him.
Q: Riley is the “big man on campus,” were you at all similar in high school?
A: I wasn’t similar at all. My high school was very sports-related and football was a big part of my high school. However, I had no dire interest in football or our sports teams. I was the edgy theatre nerd with few friends. But it paid off to stick to doing what I love rather than trying to fit in.
Q: What is the most challenging part of playing Riley?
A: The most challenging part is going through all of Riley’s emotional ups and downs. In real life I’m a very emotionally stable person so it’s interesting to dive into a state of mind where fear is predominant.
Q:What advice would you give to kids struggling with their sexuality?
A: Be yourself. I know it may sound redundant, but focusing on who you really are will only later bring joy into your life. Worry not about the potholes you may run into on your road, but focus on the destination and how you wish to see yourself in the future.
Q: Riley does not fit the stereotypical gay persona. Do you ever get letters or feedback from fans in the same situation Riley is in?
A: I do, and it gives me great pleasure to hear back from others about their experiences, and that I have helped them come to terms with themselves.
