Chantay has become a classic Degrassi character, stirring up drama in the halls of Degrassi and then reporting about it on her blog. We caught up with Jajube Mandiela to talk about the similarities and differences between her and her character, her role in Jump In!, the new season and more! And if you’re like us here at B-PB and forgot to TiVo last night’s episode of Degrassi, you can stream it on TeenNick.com!
On the show Chantay is the school gossip. Who on set do you think talks the most?
Well that can be a two-part question! I’d definitely say I talk the most on set, but Melinda always has really great stories to tell when she talks to people.
In the past you had a part in the Disney movie, Jump In! Do you have any other movies in the works?
My passion right now is definitely theatre! I was both on stage, in Sia, and directed for the first time, a play called All of Him. I also recorded the audiobook for The Heaven Shop, a teen novel which was adapted into the play Binti’s Journey, which I played the lead in a few years ago. The entire summer was really awesome and jam packed!
We hear Chantay has some love connections on the new season. What can you share about this?
I definitely give a lot of love advice, but you’ll have to watch and see if there are any connections!
You’ve been on the show for awhile now. Do you still keep in touch with old members? Who are you closest with on the cast now?
I’m closest with Melinda now. From the old cast, I keep in touch with Paula the most. But I’m always running into old cast members around Toronto , including Aubrey one day in Yorkville.
What stereotype do you think you would fit if you were a student at a normal high school?
Right now, I would be a drama geek. I’m also a gymnast, so maybe I would be a cheerleader as well – but a nice one!! I actually wanted to try out for cheerleading in high school, but they wanted me to be at school for 7AM – aahh!
I think Degrassi needs a writer just for Chantay. It’s past time to make her more than just a one-dimensional character!
heeeeey jajube’s hair is so nappy though omg. lol but i like her role in degrassi. hollaaaa
I wonder how she got on the show! It’d be real cool to be on a local show like degrassi.
