Four Year Strong Interview

If you’ve ever listened to Four Year Strong you can admit one thing: punk-rock is NOT dead. These bearded bros from Massachusetts released a flawless record earlier this year, and are celebrating by playing Warped Tour all summer long. We caught up with frontmen Alan and Dan to talk about the new record, their awesome fan base, and more!

Introduce yourselves and what you do in the band.
Alan: My name is Alan and I sing and play guitar.
Dan: I’m Dan and I also sing and play guitar.

Tell a secret about yourself and everyone else in the band.
Alan: A secret about myself…I’m smart, handsome, funny and very modest!
Dan: A secret about myself…..
Alan: He doesn’t really have a beard, its fake!
Dan: A secret about Josh…
Alan: He’s not really a vegetarian, it’s an act!
Dan: A secret about Jake is that he’s actually straight edge.
Alan: A secret about Joe is that he’s never watched a Bruins game in his life.

You released your album earlier this year, how has the response been?
Alan: It’s been great! Can’t complain, every show has been amazing, it’s been really cool.

How did you pick the singles?
Dan: We just kind of went with what songs we liked…most of the kids kind of picked them themselves.  That’s how we chose Wasting Time, because the kids really liked it.

What are your favorite songs on the album?
Alan: “It Must Really Suck to Be Four Year Strong Right Now”
Dan: My favorite song on the album is “One Step at a Time”.
Alan: I have a lot of favorites on that record, it’s hard to choose…Enemy of the World, I love that song.

How did you get involved with Decaydance records?
Alan: You know they just gave us tons and tons of money and we couldn’t turn it down!  Nah I’m just kidding, that didn’t happen at all.
Dan: We were with I Surrender records and Rob, who owns I Surrender, was friends with Pete and we started our record and one day we were talking to Rob and he asked about working together with the two labels and we thought it was a good idea because Pete has worked really hard for what he’s got.

What’s your favorite part about Warped Tour?
Alan: Everything.  And nothing…NOT getting tattooed!  I got a tattoo on my leg and it got infected, look how swollen my ankle is.  We have to go see a doctor tomorrow.
Dan: I really like catering.
Alan: Catering is delicious.  The show is generally awesome.

What bands have you been watching?
Alan: Polar Bear Club, Set Your Goals, Every Time I Die…lots of bands!

What do you have planned for after Warped Tour?
Alan: Time off to recoop from a tour like this!
Dan: Yeah, we’re taking time to hang with our families and stuff.  In the fall we’re going to be doing a headlining tour around the US.

Can you tell us about the tour?
Dan: We don’t really know much about it…we’re still trying to figure out what bands are going to be on it and where it’s going to be and stuff like that.

You released a deluxe edition of Enemy of the World, what is on that that’s not on the regular version?
Alan: Four acoustic songs, which are four songs that are on the record done acoustically and kind of…reimagined.  And a plus side that we recorded for the record that didn’t make it.

Is there one specific goal you want to reach with the band?
Dan: Uh to be as rich and famous as possible [laughs].
Alan: We just want to take the band as far as it can go and that’s the thing, we’re not going to sell out or you know start wearing makeup…
Dan: I want to start wearing makeup.  My goal in life is to tour with Foo Fighters, so Dave if you’re out there, take us out!

Do you have anything to add?
Alan: Kids come see us at Warped Tour and at our headlining tour whenever that is.
