A little while ago, our friend Amanda was able to conduct a short interview with fun. for us! If you have yet to check out this amazing band’s latest release, Aim and Ignite, you’re missing out! Check these guys out on tour with Jack’s Mannequin later this year!
I read an previous interview that the the song, “The Gambler”, was based on that by Kenny Rogers. How exactly did you interpret his song to come up with your own?
Actually it’s not really based on the song. Somebody heard part of it and thought one of the melodies in our song sounded like one from Kenny’s. It was a working title that stuck and somehow makes sense in a roundabout way.
A huge part of the bands’ fan-base seems to come from Nate’s former band, The Format. Will fun. continue to play songs from The Format to keep this strong following through years to come?
We’re all proud of our past bands, but we’re more focused on the songs we’ve written, and will continue to write, as fun. We may continue to throw the occasional Format song in, but it’s definitely not ever going to be a focal point of the shows.
Has the band started to write material for a sophomore album? Is there anything fans can be expecting?
We’ve begun writing things individually, but we haven’t worked on anything for a new record together yet. We’ve sort of hinted to each other where our own individual songs are going, and so far the ideas are pretty different from each other. It’s fun to hear what the other guys have envisioned for the next record, and I love sharing my ideas with them. It’s a really wonderful environment and it feels good to talk about the future. I can’t wait to get together in the same room with them and write again.
Which song off of Aim and Ignite do you feel is the most powerful and would convert someone into a fun. fan?
I think ‘Be Calm’ shows a pretty broad range of everything that’s to come on the record. It’s the song I’m most proud of. I’m not sure if it’d convert anyone into being a fan of ours, but I think if they like it, they’ll like the rest of the record too.
