A few months ago we caught up with MTV star, Just Kait. You may have heard her song if you’re a fan of MTV’s Parental Control, but this 17 year old has a LOT more going for her.
Introduce yourself and what you do?
I‘m Kait. I sing, play guitar, drums, and bass. I’m Just Kait.
How’d you go about doing the song for Parental Control?
I just redid it and put my own little twist on to it because it was just a contest to redo it. The fact that I just redid it and put my own little twist on it and it actually got picked is really cool because I watch the show all the time so its definitely awesome.
You play a lot of instruments, how old were you when you started playing each?
When I was 5 I started playing drums and my dad used to play and stuff. Then around 12 I started playing guitar because I had an injury from sports and stuff that I couldn’t play sports so I needed something else to do. So I started playing guitar around 12 which was by myself, then around 14 I picked up bass.
You’re only 17, is it hard being a normal teenager and being famous?
Now it is cause its like my senior year and the video has been airing for awhile now so I’ll like go into school and everyone is like “I saw your video on MTV!” and its like every day the same thing. People want to be my friend that normally aren’t my friend. Its just a line you have to draw between making sure you know who your friends are. That part is hard but I mean its still cool having your video on MTV and having people know who you are….its bittersweet.
Do you have any stories about high school experiences?
On one of the first days of school this year I went into my English class and he was giving the example and I didn’t know my teacher knew about like my music or anything. He just started using me as an example. He was like “If you see Just Kait on TV you know you gotta do this and that.” It was just funny because I had no idea that the teachers even knew about it. Like I didn’t know that older people watched MTV still!
What was it like playing shows with All Time Low and The White Tie Affair this summer?
Oh my god it was awesome! All Time Low, they’re really cool..they’re really nice guys, same with White Tie Affair. It seems like we’re friends now, it doesn’t seem like the band I love anymore. I still love them but just getting to know them and you know playing with them and getting to hang out after shows- it made the whole experience even cooler. Especially since me and my little sister used to listen to All Time Low and stuff so, it was a really crazy feeling.
What’s next for you?
Right now I have a digital EP out. Soon hopefully we’ll get on some kind of tour and then we’ll get the full length album. That should be out sometime in the first quarter, like January sometime. Hopefully that goes well, we’re trying to just play a lot of shows so people can kinda get a feel for the music and what it sounds like live, not just hearing the album.
